How the Material Calculator Works

The calculator works through a straightforward pipeline. From your wall width, batten face width, and target gap, it derives the batten count and cut length for each batten — equal to your wall or panel height. If you've enabled top rail, bottom rail, or chair rail in Advanced Options, their cut lengths (equal to the wall width) are added to the list. Every component becomes a line item in the cut list, and the sum of all cut lengths across all components gives the net linear footage.

The waste allowance — your chosen 5%, 10%, or 15% — is then added on top of net footage to produce the purchase quantity. The Materials tab shows both figures separately so you can see the exact margin built in. The Shopping List tab formats everything as a clean summary you can read at the lumber yard: component names, quantities, board counts, and linear footage totals without the detailed cut assignments that would be confusing at a store aisle. For multi-wall projects, all walls contribute to a single combined material total.

Actual vs. Nominal Dimensions

Lumber nominal sizes describe the rough-sawn board before it's dried and planed. The board you buy is smaller. A nominal 1×4 is 3.5" wide; a 1×3 is 2.5"; a 1×6 is 5.5". Using the nominal size in the calculator gives you the wrong batten count and the wrong spacing — with 1×4 battens entered as 4" instead of 3.5", every calculated gap is 0.5" too narrow, and across 9 battens that's 4.5" of cumulative spacing error. Always measure your actual boards before entering dimensions, or use the preset buttons which fill in the correct actual widths automatically.

Reading the Cut List, Stock Tab, and Shopping List

The Cut List tab breaks down every component — battens, top rail, bottom rail — showing the quantity, cut length per piece, and total linear footage for that component type. For most single-wall projects with consistent batten heights, every batten cut is the same length, making the list simple to read and execute at the saw.

The Stock tab assigns every individual cut to a specific physical board. It uses a First Fit Decreasing algorithm: cuts are sorted from longest to shortest, then each cut is placed on the first board that has enough remaining space, deducting the saw kerf between adjacent cuts. The result is a board-by-board assignment showing which cuts go where, how much of each board is consumed, and what remains as a usable offcut (pieces 12" or longer) or waste. You can mark your actual boards in the lumber pile to match these assignments before cutting.

Entering accurate values for Stock Board Length and Saw Kerf in Advanced Options before reading the stock plan matters. The default is 96" boards with a 1/8" kerf. If your batten cut length is close to 96", consider switching to 120" boards — the remainder may be long enough to yield a rail cut, reducing total board count. Change the setting and the Stock and Shopping List tabs update immediately.

Waste Allowance

Net linear footage is the theoretical exact requirement. Real projects always lose some material — the end cross-cut to square a board, a defect in the wrong place, a piece cut slightly short that needs to be redone. The waste allowance adds a purchasing buffer on top of the net footage.

Use 5% for a simple single-wall project with no openings and straightforward cut lengths. Ten percent is the safe default for most projects — it covers typical off-cut waste and minor mistakes without significantly over-ordering. Use 15% when your wall has multiple doors or windows that generate numerous short cuts: openings force the layout to end and restart on each side, producing more short off-cut pieces that fall below the reusable threshold. If you're working with expensive lumber where a second trip to the store carries a real cost premium, 15% provides additional protection.

Choosing Lumber for Board and Batten

Select pine (sometimes labeled premium or smooth pine) is the most widely available option at home improvement stores. It paints well and comes in the four standard widths. Inspect boards before buying: minor surface knots seal under stain-blocking primer, but large or loose knots should be avoided in visible locations. Finger-jointed pine is made from short lengths joined end-to-end — typically the lowest cost at big-box stores. The joints disappear completely under primer and paint and the finished result is indistinguishable from clear pine. It's a sound choice wherever the trim will be painted.

Poplar is a hardwood that machines cleanly, has minimal grain, and accepts paint with fewer coats than most softwoods. It costs more per linear foot than pine but is worth considering when a very smooth painted surface is a priority — the extra primer coats you'd otherwise need on pine can close the cost gap. MDF gives the smoothest painted finish of any option because its surface is dense and completely grain-free. It is also typically the lowest cost per linear foot. The tradeoff is moisture sensitivity: standard MDF swells and delaminates when exposed to humidity or water. It is not appropriate for bathrooms, laundry rooms, or any area with sustained high humidity. For those spaces, PVC trim board is fully waterproof and paintable; moisture-resistant MDF is a step up from standard but still requires sealed cut ends and should be kept away from direct water contact.

How much lumber do I need for board and batten?

Enter your wall dimensions and check the Materials or Shopping List tab. The calculator totals linear footage for battens and rails, applies your waste allowance, and gives the purchase quantity. A 12×8-foot wall with 9 battens plus top and bottom rails typically needs 80–90 linear feet.

What is the best wood for board and batten walls?

For painted interior walls: select pine and finger-jointed pine are most affordable. Poplar paints more cleanly with fewer coats. MDF gives the smoothest finish at the lowest cost per linear foot but is not suitable for bathrooms — use PVC trim or moisture-resistant MDF there.

What size battens should I use?

1×4 (3.5" actual) is the most common — balanced for most wall heights and spacing preferences. 1×3 (2.5") suits tighter spacing or smaller walls. 1×6 (5.5") works with wider gaps. Always enter actual face width, not nominal size.

How do I account for waste?

10% is the safe default for most projects. Use 15% for walls with multiple openings. The Materials tab shows net footage and purchase quantity separately so you can see the buffer.

Can I use MDF for board and batten?

Yes, for dry interior walls. MDF paints very smoothly and is typically the lowest cost per linear foot. Standard MDF swells with moisture — do not use it in bathrooms or humid spaces. Use PVC trim or moisture-resistant MDF there.

Should I buy 8-foot or 10-foot boards?

When batten cut length is close to 90"–95", 8-foot boards yield one batten each with little usable leftover. 10-foot boards often allow a rail cut from the remainder. Change Stock Board Length in Advanced Options and compare the Stock tab result.

What does net linear footage mean?

Net linear footage is the exact total length of lumber required with no waste buffer. The waste allowance is added on top to produce the purchase quantity. Buy the purchase quantity, not the net footage.
