The Basic Spacing Formula

Board and batten spacing is determined by three inputs: your wall width, the number of battens, and the actual face width of each batten. The formula differs depending on your chosen edge treatment — specifically, where the first and last battens are positioned relative to the wall edges.

Understanding which formula applies to your situation is important before entering numbers. The battens at edges treatment places a batten flush with each wall corner — the formula assumes the first batten left edge aligns with the left wall edge and the last batten right edge aligns with the right wall edge. The equal end spaces treatment leaves an equal open gap on both sides of the batten group, so the first and last battens float away from the wall edges. Most interior accent wall installations use equal end spaces because it creates a symmetrical, centered look.

Battens at Both Edges

Clear Gap = (Wall Width − N × Batten Width) / (N − 1)

Where N is the number of battens. The first and last battens are flush with the wall edge. Requires at least 2 battens.

Equal End Spaces

Clear Gap = (Wall Width − N × Batten Width) / (N + 1)

Worked Example

For a 144-inch (12-foot) wide wall with 9 battens, each 3.5 inches wide (1×4 actual), using equal end spaces:

Gap = (144 − 9 × 3.5) / (9 + 1) = (144 − 31.5) / 10 = 11.25"

Each gap between battens, and each end space, is exactly 11.25 inches. The same wall with 8 battens gives: (144 − 28) / 9 = 12.89 inches. With 10 battens: (144 − 35) / 11 = 9.91 inches. Center-to-Center Spacing

Center-to-center (CTC) spacing is the distance from the center of one batten to the center of the next. It equals the clear gap plus one batten face width:

CTC = Clear Gap + Batten Width

For the example above: CTC = 11.25 + 3.5 = 14.75 inches. Center-to-center spacing is the value you use when marking positions on a wall for accurate installation, because you're measuring to a consistent reference point (the center) rather than measuring to alternating edges. It's also what specification sheets use when they call out spacing for a panel system.

The distinction between clear gap and CTC matters in practice. A clear gap of 12 inches with 3.5-inch battens gives a CTC of 15.5 inches. If you tell a contractor "16-inch spacing," they may interpret that as CTC — which would give you a clear gap of 12.5 inches with 3.5-inch battens, not 12 inches. To avoid ambiguity, specify both: "12-inch clear gap, 15.5-inch center-to-center."

Finding the Right Batten Count

More battens gives a smaller gap — a denser, more formal pattern. What Spacing Looks Right for Different Room Sizes

Spacing preference is partly aesthetic and partly constrained by your wall width. The available gap options for a given wall are determined by the batten count, so not every spacing is achievable — you choose from the options the math allows. On a wider wall, more batten counts are in range, giving you more flexibility. On a narrow wall, you may have only two or three realistic options.

For a typical bedroom accent wall at 10 to 14 feet wide, most people land between 8 and 16 battens, with a clear gap of 10 to 16 inches. For a smaller wall — a 6-foot bathroom wall, for example — the count might be 3 to 6 battens with a gap of 8 to 14 inches. The nominal name describes the rough-sawn board size before it's dried and planed; the actual dimension is what you measure when the board is in your hands.

Always use the actual face width in your spacing calculations. Using 4 inches for a 1×4 board instead of 3.5 inches throws your gap calculation off by 0.5 inches per batten position.
